1834 Global Fellowship 2027 Opens for Black Canadian

The 1834 Global Fellowship is a nine-week virtual program designed for high-potential Black Canadians between the ages of 20 and 30. It aims to build skills and support career development for those aspiring to lead in global civic and international affairs. The program is offered in collaboration with the Centre for Diaspora and Transnational Studies at the University of Toronto.

Program Structure and Activities

The fellowship uses a blend of mentorship, virtual sessions, and research to provide training. Organizers state the goal is to give fellows the tools and networks needed to understand and shape global systems impacting Black communities.

The program is structured around three core activities. First, weekly '1834 Global Mixers' are facilitated sessions covering global issues and leadership challenges. These sessions focus on areas like diplomacy, governance, and policy design.

Second, fellows work on '1834 Global Research Projects'. Participants are grouped into policy teams that collaborate on research tied to real-world global issues. Each team is paired with an experienced coach for mentorship.

Finally, the program culminates in the '1834 Global Summit'. This is an in-person capstone event that brings together policymakers, analysts, and civically engaged youth. It provides a platform for fellows to present their research and connect with institutions shaping global policy.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Ideal candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements. They must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents who identify as Black or of African descent. Applicants must be aged 20 to 30 and express interest in a career in international development, diplomacy, or Canadian foreign policy.

Candidates must also commit to participating in the nine-week virtual program, which requires approximately 3.5 hours per week. They must be willing and able to travel for the final in-person Summit.

Application Process

Eligible candidates must apply through the 1834 Foundation's online application system. The required supporting documents include a personal statement of up to 400 words, two letters of reference, and a current resume.

One reference letter must come from an academic source, and the other from an employer or community leader. Applicants are responsible for ensuring these letters are submitted by the deadline. Referees may send letters directly to a specified program email.
