International Affairs Fellowship in Canada

Applications are now open for the 2027-2028 International Affairs Fellowship (IAF) in Canada. According to the program's sponsor, Power Corporation of Canada, the fellowship offers a $110,000 stipend for a twelve-month period, with a deadline of October 30, 2026.

The fellowship, launched in 2016, aims to strengthen understanding and cooperation between emerging leaders in the United States and Canada. It enables mid-career U.S. Professionals to spend six to twelve months at a Canadian institution. Individuals from academia, business, government, journalism, non-governmental organizations, and think tanks are all encouraged to apply.

Fellowship Benefits and Structure

The program awards a stipend of $110,000 for a full twelve-month fellowship. For shorter durations, the stipend is prorated. A modest travel allowance is also provided. The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), which administers the program, states that fellows are considered independent contractors and are not eligible for employment benefits like health insurance.

CFR assists fellows in finding a host organization in Canada that matches their proposed work. However, all placements are made at the discretion of the host institution, and CFR cannot guarantee a specific placement. The fellowship requires a full-time, in-person commitment, with fellows expected to work on-site with their host organization for at least four days per week.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet several specific criteria. They must be U.S. Citizens and mid-career professionals with a strong record of achievement. A demonstrated commitment to a foreign policy career and an interest in U.S.-Canada relations is required. All applicants must hold at least a bachelor's degree and possess a U.S. Passport valid for six months beyond the fellowship's end date.

Selection Criteria and Application Process

Selection for the IAF in Canada is based on four main criteria. The program evaluates an applicant's scholarly qualifications and professional experience. The merits and feasibility of their research proposal on U.S.-Canada relations are critically assessed. Character and personal qualities that promote cross-cultural communication are considered, as is the contribution the fellowship would make to the applicant's career development.

Interested candidates can apply online between September 8 and October 30, 2026, for the 2027-28 cycle. The application requires basic biographical, educational, and employment information, a project proposal with suggested placements, and two letters of support. Awardees will be notified by spring 2027.

The program reports that prior experience working in or writing about Canada is not a requirement for application.
