A new $1,500 annual scholarship is now available for students entering Northwest Missouri State University in fall 2027. The Northwest Dual Credit Scholarship aims to make pursuing a bachelor's degree more affordable for those who have already taken university-level courses in high school.
To qualify, students must have completed at least three hours of dual credit coursework through Northwest. They must also be entering as first-time, degree-seeking freshmen. The scholarship can be renewed for up to four years, or eight semesters, and may be combined with other automatic scholarships the university offers.
Dr. Allison Hoffmann, Northwest’s associate provost of enrollment management and student success, explained the rationale. "Northwest dual credit students earning this scholarship have demonstrated academic success in our courses and are likely to be highly engaged campus students," she said. The scholarship is intended to reward their efforts and provide financial support.
Eligibility and Renewal Requirements
Eligibility for the initial award is tied to prior dual credit enrollment. To renew the scholarship each year, recipients must meet specific academic benchmarks. They must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.00 and complete 24 credit hours annually. The award is not available to commuter students or those who choose to live off-campus after their first year.
A Glimpse into Dual Credit Benefits
The value of dual credit opportunities was demonstrated recently when West Platte High School students visited the campus. Juniors and seniors enrolled in a dual credit chemistry course participated in a lab activity in the Garrett-Strong Science Building on September 4. Working with faculty, they used university equipment to measure the density of plastics.
Shelly Day, a chemistry teacher at West Platte High School and a Northwest alumna, highlighted the program's impact. "It bridges the gap between high school expectations and college expectations," she said. Day noted that the experience helps prepare students for the transition to full-time campus life, reducing the shock of college-level science courses.
Northwest's Dual Credit Program
Northwest has offered dual credit courses since 1995. The program is designed for high school students, allowing them to complete college courses at a significantly reduced rate. Courses are taught in partner high schools by instructors approved by the university. For students whose high schools lack qualified instructors, online dual credit courses are available.
The university's dual credit program has been accredited by the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) since 2004. This accreditation ensures the courses taught in high schools match the rigor of those offered on campus. Northwest faculty from each academic school train and collaborate with high school partners to maintain this quality.
