Scholarship Benefits
The comprehensive scholarship package is designed to cover all major costs associated with doctoral study in the UK. It includes approved round-trip airfare from the scholar's home country, with all tuition fees covered by an agreement between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) and the host UK university.
Scholars receive a monthly stipend for living costs. The rate is £1,712 per month, or £2,000 per month for those studying at universities within the London metropolitan area. The funding also provides a study travel grant for research-related journeys within the UK or overseas.
Additional financial support is available for fieldwork conducted outside the UK, covering one economy-class return airfare to the fieldwork location. Scholars are also eligible for a paid mid-term visit airfare to their home country, subject to specific conditions regarding family allowances.
Family Allowances

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet strict criteria to be considered. They must be a citizen, refugee, or British Protected Person from an eligible Commonwealth country and be permanently resident there. Candidates must be available to begin academic studies in the UK at the start of the academic year in September 2027.
By September 2027, applicants must hold a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honours standard. Those with a lower second-class degree must also possess a relevant postgraduate qualification, typically a Master's degree. The scholarship is for those unable to afford UK study without it.
A key rule states that applicants must not already be registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, at a UK university or in their home country before September or October 2026.
Application Process
The application requires detailed supporting documentation. Applicants must list all their undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications and provide details of their employment history, explaining its relevance to their proposed UK study programme.
The form also asks for a list of up to ten publications and prizes.
