The University of Bayreuth Centre of International Excellence “Alexander von Humboldt” Short Term Grants Programme 2026 is now accepting applications. The programme aims to promote excellent research at the University of Bayreuth and advance the internationalisation of research and networking with top universities worldwide.

The programme invites researchers to carry out their own research projects in cooperation with a local host at the University of Bayreuth. Prior to submission of the application, applicants are required to identify a host in Bayreuth with whom they aim to carry out their research project. The research projects should benefit both the candidate and the host.

The local hosts will provide their grantees with appropriate office and lab space and an up-to-date infrastructure.

## Grants

The programme offers Short Term Grants, which include the reimbursement of travel expenses between the home institution and Bayreuth as well as accommodation costs in Bayreuth. The costs will be refunded up to a maximum of €3,500. The grants are available to researchers regardless of their field of research.

## Eligibility

The programme awards Short Term Grants to individuals affiliated with institutions abroad with challenging and innovative research projects of top academic quality through a highly competitive, strictly merit-based selection process. Applicants must have a PhD, and it is indispensable that the PhD procedure is fully completed (including PhD diploma). The selection criteria are the academic excellence of both the applicant and the cooperative project as well as the potential for networking with the University of Bayreuth beyond the local host.

The programme views the diversity of awardees as an asset and is expressly committed to the goal of gender equality. Female scholars and anyone who can help make the research profile of the university more diverse are strongly encouraged to apply.
