This change follows a $6.5 million appropriation from the Commonwealth of Virginia's 2026 Special Session. The state funding, provided for fiscal year 2027, is intended to support enrollment growth, accelerated study pathways, and lower tuition for in-state medical students. Virginia Tech states this is the first direct General Fund support for VTCSOM. The Board of Visitors had initially approved a fiscal year 2027 tuition rate of $63,985 for all students in April 2026, but the new proposal establishes the lower resident rate to achieve the legislative intent.
Tuition Changes and Implementation
The tuition reduction applies only to students classified as Virginia residents. The rate for out-of-state students remains unchanged at $63,985 per year, as the Commonwealth of Virginia does not provide funding for non-resident student tuition.
Students do not need to apply for the reduction. Since Fall 2026 bills were already issued at the previously approved semester rate of $31,992.50, a $7,500 credit will be applied to Virginia residents' accounts. The university says the charge reduction should appear within a few business days, but it will take several more business days for Financial Aid to adjust awards as necessary. Refunds should be processed in approximately two weeks.
Not all students will receive a cash refund. The announcement clarifies that for students using financial aid like loans, the aid package will be reduced to reflect the new rates, which may not result in a refund.
One-Time Scholarships for Current Students
In addition to the future tuition cut, the university has approved one-time FY27 scholarships for currently enrolled Virginia resident students. These awards are based on the student's current year in the medical school program.
